by Allison Kozicharow

The WiRED International Board is pleased to announce Christopher Spirito as its newest board member. Mr. Spirito, currently with The MITRE Corporation, brings valuable expertise in engineering and technology to WiRED International and its global telemedicine outreach programs. Board chair Anthony Hodge said, "We are all very excited by having Chris join our Board as he is truly a cutting edge pioneer in the information technology world, which is so critical for and so much a part of WiRED International and its future activities."

WiRED director Gary Selnow said, "I've known Chris for six years and find him to be among the brightest young people I've ever met. He has overseas experience, knows the health field, and is a top-flight IT engineer. Chris's work on WiRED's project with Harvard was, indeed, impressive. He will make a wonderful addition to our board."

Mr. Spirito's past clinical experience and passion for healthcare drive his support and commitment to WiRED. He said, "After meeting Dr. Selnow I knew that WiRED International was exactly the type of organization I wanted to work with. The impact of WiRED's global health programs over the past 10 years has been remarkable. I look forward to bringing my experience to WiRED to help build out new programs and expand existing ones in support of healthcare providers worldwide."

While completing his last two years at The Pingry School, Mr. Spirito worked weekends and summers in the Respiratory Therapy department at Overlook Hospital, a teaching hospital in New Jersey. His clinical experience over the following 13 years included positions in a Cardiac Unit interpreting EKG's, EMT positions in Massachusetts and New Jersey, including a tour with UMDNJ-Newark EMS, and thousands of hours on rounds learning along the way.

He is currently a principal engineer with The MITRE Corporation, a federally funded research and development center. Through this position he met Dr. Selnow and started working with WiRED on the Iraqi Telemedicine Network. In 2009 MITRE and WiRED joined forces with Partners Healthcare and students at the Harvard School of Public Health to create a Seminar in Management of TB-HIV Co-Infection. Prior to rejoining MITRE, Mr. Spirito was the director of technology for Lux Research. He has also held positions with The LinQuest Corporation, General Dynamics, EMC, and BBN.

Mr. Spirito is married to Jennifer, a social worker for the School Age Mothers (SAM) Program in the City of Worcester, MA. The Spiritos have two daughters, Olivia age 9 and Meghan age 6. And when he can, Mr. Spirito enjoys a good game of tennis.
