ost children in the United States and other Western countries are screened for congenital heart defects when they are born and during their first year of life. Once detected, these heart defects can often be corrected, and the children go on to lead normal, healthy lives. In many parts of rural China, however, doctors are not trained to detect these fatal congenital heart defects; as a result, children who are born in these areas with such heart defects are not likely to survive to adulthood.

To address this and other critical cardiac health issues in China, WiRED International is partnering with U.S. physicians who work with the nonprofit organization China California Heart Watch (China Cal), which serves the rural poor in China. China Cal provides medical research, education and training of medical professionals, and free healthcare to impoverished Chinese farmers. Together WiRED and China Cal are developing a series of training modules for rural doctors in the Yunnan Province of China, which has a population of 45.7 million and includes some of the poorest regions in the world.

Currently, medical training of rural doctors in Yunnan Province is severely limited. Village doctors receive only minimal training after high school, with little or no focused education on chronic diseases, such as hypertension and heart disease. As a result, these chronic conditions often go untreated. Each rural doctor cares for approximately 1,000 to 2,000 patients, often in poorly equipped hospitals and poor sanitary conditions, according to China Cal.

Using WiRED International's healthcare training tools, China Cal physicians will provide rural doctors with fundamental information about the prevalent illnesses affecting their communities. WiRED is making available its entire Community Health Information (CHI) program, which contains approximately 150 e-library training modules created for four different levels of complexity, from basic information for grassroots communities to advanced instruction for medical professionals. WiRED modules will be used in training sessions for many of Yunnan's 10,000 rural doctors.

In addition to providing selected modules from the CHI collection in Mandarin, WiRED will work with China Cal physicians to address special needs. For example, together, we have recently completed a training module on infant cardiac examinations with a focus on heart murmurs.

Heart disease and high blood pressure are reaching epidemic proportions and are now the leading causes of death in China. Rural doctors trained through WiRED's new modules will learn to diagnose and treat cardiovascular disease and high blood pressure; perform tests and procedures; prescribe needed medications; recognize and treat complications of high blood pressure, such as heart attack and stroke; and more.

The knowledge and medical training presented in this series of modules will help thousands of doctors in China save lives and better serve their communities.
