"The test was done and in less than an hour I knew my fate. I thank God because it came out negative and I also thank the CHIC program for their helpful information. Were it not for them, I would have continued with my risky sexual behavior."

My Nightmare
Written by a client, St. John's CHIC
Edited by Christine Scivicque

Life had been a nightmare for me. I would wake up and wonder what the future had in store for me.

This is the story of a young man who had a tough life despite being a humble man.

I had an affair with a girl in my rural area and when I came to Nairobi, I started meeting other 'better' girls and felt that she was no longer in my list of girlfriends. As time went by, I started feeling depressed and as fate would have it, I came across a poster talking of free information on health. I asked for the way to the center and what happened is all history.

I was introduced to the project and made regular visits to the CHIC program and my concentration was AIDS. This was because I heard stories that some of the girls I had had affairs with were infected. After much learning, I at last made up my mind to go for an HIV test. I talked to one client support staff and she supported me. She took me to the clinic and, as anxiety mounted up, she soothed me with words of encouragement. The test was done and in less than an hour I knew my fate. I thank God because it came out negative and I also thank the CHIC program for their helpful information. Were it not for them, I would have continued with my risky sexual behavior. I have made a vow to myself and to God to abstain until I get married because I have seen HIV/AIDS is real and not a tale. I wish such education would be taken to my rural area where my people do not know that there is AIDS.

Thank you WiRED.
