WiRED took its programs to Kosovo at the request of the Global Technology Corp at the U.S. Department of State. The U.S. Department of State had established free computer centers at seven locations in war-ravaged Kosovo as part of its Kosovo Internet Access Initiative (KIAI). These centers were managed by the International Organization on Migration, and WiRED provided the operational, educational and research components. This experience inspired several additional uses of technology, such as WiRED’s Video Visit Program. This program enables families of seriously ill children who are undergoing treatment in European hospitals to make "live" visits with their families in developing countries via Internet-linked video.
