Series: Highlighting WiRED's Volunteers
by Sally Stillman
Henry Miller wrote that “One’s destination is never a place, but a new way of seeing things.” For volunteer Angela Woon, working with WiRED International has not only allowed her (albeit virtually) to satisfy her wanderlust, but to gain a new perspective on remote countries, cultures, and the problems they face.
Originally from Malaysia, Angela has been a volunteer for WiRED since 2004. Working closely with Executive Director Gary Selnow, Ph.D., Angela’s experience at WIRED includes researching grant availability, detailing the work of WIRED’s other volunteers, and drafting project descriptions to help promote WIRED’s cause. A graduate of Iowa State University, Ames (with a bachelor of science in journalism and mass communication), Angela is currently a communications specialist for Blood Centers of the Pacific.
“Angela has been with us now for more than six years. Her talents, energy and sunny outlook have not only enriched all of us here, but she exhibits every day the volunteer spirit that has enabled organizations, such as WiRED, to provide humanitarian assistance to people around the world.”
— Dr. Gary Selnow
Angela donates a great deal of her time, having also volunteered for organizations such as Taproot and Streetside Stories. A quick glimpse into Angela’s background suggests WiRED and Angela are a natural fit. As a child, Angela had little opportunity to travel, but broadened her horizons with several “snail-mail” pen pals across the world. She was also inspired by seeing her mother, who, even whilst raising Angela and her siblings single-handedly, always had time to aid others in the
community, extend a helping hand and demonstrate the power of putting words into action. With recent volunteering activities such as conducting interviews, helping at the food bank, and writing for a variety of local nonprofit organizations, following her mother’s example is clearly something Angela has taken to heart.
WiRED is grateful to Angela for her ongoing efforts to assist with health education programs abroad. Dr. Selnow said, “Angela has been with us now for more than six years. Her talents, energy and sunny outlook have not only enriched all of us here, but she exhibits every day the volunteer spirit that has enabled organizations, such as WiRED, to provide humanitarian assistance to people around the world.”
