COPD, or chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, is a progressive lung disease that gets worse over time, making it hard to breathe. Indoor air pollution from wood and charcoal use is responsible for more than 1.6 million annual deaths and 2.7 percent of the global cases of COPD in developing countries, according to the World Health Organization (WHO).
